Experience

NIC Information Center

BGSU Libraries

Napoleon Public Library

The NIC Information Center is unique in that users are allowed to take NIC produced documents to keep. As Library Technician, I maintain the inventory of NIC produced documents. This includes building and updating spreadsheets documenting production, stock, and distribution of materials. I work in ZenDesk customer service software to respond to electronic information requests, which involves performing a reference interview, researching, and sending information to the user. This often requires me to compose subject specific literature reviews. I update bibliographies and help to maintain a knowledgebase of current topics in corrections. I also work with NIC staff prepare for corrections related conferences and events. This sometimes includes designing marketing materials to promote library services, NIC programs, and NIC publications.

I worked on an ongoing cataloging project in which I convert video catalog records into segmented entries, in order to improve the discoverability of subjects within a whole document. This has involved establishing cataloging policies, and creating and editing records in Koha integrated library system.

At the BGSU Library Curriculum Resource Center (CRC) I worked part time as a Student Library Assistant. The CRC is a specific section of the library housing a collection of materials intended to be used as teaching aids. The primary user base consisted of Education Majors, and educators. I assisted students, professors, and teachers with research. I responded to reference questions both over the phone and face-to-face.

Projects I worked on included processing new materials, which involved creating records in Millennium integrated library system, and updating a WordPress blog with book reviews.

I worked at Napoleon Public Library in the capacity of Library Assistant. I worked closely with library patrons in the Juvenile Department including children, parents, and teachers; assisting in book selection, and answering reference questions. Working in Polaris integrated library system, I checked materials out to patrons. I also assisted in the planning, marketing, and production of various children’s programming.

Other responsibilities included helping to inspect returned materials, returning items to shelves, troubleshooting PCs and printers, maintaining tidiness and organization of book shelves, shifting, and shelf reading.
